Summer Is Here…
Summer is here in the Barossa and Maggie's seasonal compendium will help you make the most of every delicious moment of it!
Cucumbers are perfectly timed for their regular appearances across Summer, making a great addition to a simple salad, used as an essential part of crudites, or grated into a thick set yoghurt for a more traditionally Greek take on things, but it’s quite a rare occasion when a recipe really makes cucumbers the star of the dish and I’ve often wondered if that’s because the cucumbers that eventually make their way onto our plates via transport and storage aren’t a pinch on what comes out of a home garden. The difference with a homegrown cucumber, besides the unparalleled freshness, is the water content is at its maximum when just picked and that makes for the very best crunch, and flavour - well worth any gardener’s effort to have on hand in the heat of Summer. -MB
To stay at Orchard House in Summer is to surround yourself with the full beauty of the Barossa seasons. As Maggie says, "Now that we have our Orchard, it’s the stone fruit that ripens during Summer that has become the quintessential flavours of the season for me - apricots, peaches, nectarines and plums. With our Orchard in full swing across the Summer months, we have an extremely busy time of picking, cutting, drying and packing our fruit. I love seeing the trays of jewel-like apricots drying in the sunshine - it tells me Summer is definitely here." If ever there was a perfect time to spend a weekend in the middle of Maggie’s Barossa orchard, it’s now!
A literal hop, skip and a jump through the pear trees to her famous Farm Shop, the “Orchard House” offers an experience hand picked by Maggie to ensure you’ll feel like a local the moment you walk through the beautiful old farmhouse door. The Maggie Beer Foundation was established in May 2014 with one purpose - to improve the food experience for everyone in aged care. Of course though the purpose seems simple, the implications, the needs, the opportunities, the reasons, the difficulties and the resolve present a rich recipe; and for that we need the help of many committed people who will follow us on the journey...
