For the gardener, the scent a tomato bush releases on a summer’s day, and the tingle on the skin as you brush past it, is worth any amount of time spent watering. Although it has a thousand culinary possibilities, picked ripe from the garden the tomato needs no more attention than a drizzle of good extra virgin olive oil, a turn of freshly ground back pepper and a sprig of its companion in life, basil.
